In winter the snow lays thick and soft across the wintry landscape and makes it appear enchanted. The area of Fanes-Senes-Fodara in the heart of Unesco World Natural Heritage is a paradise for those who like ski touring and for lovers of magic winter walks.
It is also possible to sledge form the mountain refuges down to the valley floor. Starting from Pederü, you may reach the mountain refuges of Fodara Vedla, Senes or in the area of Fanes the Rifugio Lavarella and Rifugio Fanes either on foot, on Alpine touring skis or by snow cat. Expert skiers have the possibility to climb up the 3,000 metres of Lavarella, Conturines and Cima Dieci.
Even for practicing snow-shoeing, the most fashionable winter sport at the moment, the Nature Park offers ideal conditions. There are tracks and mountain slopes varying in length and difficulty and appealing to a variety of moods, but all offering exceptional views over the winter landscape. Snow-shoeing enables even non-skiers to reach the mountain tops in winter.
And for those who prefer sweating little and seeing much, there is the new Visitor Centre of the Nature Park in San Vigilio.
The architectonically interesting and view catching building holds a multi-media museum about the nature park. Games, terrariums, photos, short films and much more guide children as well as adults through the natural wonders of Fanes-Senes-Braies. The exposition includes of course also some archaeological finds from the famous Conturines Cave, where the ancient remains of the cave bears were discovered. The admission to the museum is free.
